In October 2015, UNESCO inscribed the "Archives of the Nanjing Massacre" on the Memory of the World Register. The archives, preserved by seven institutions including the Central Archives and the Second Historical Archives of China, document the historical facts of the Nanjing Massacre of 1937-1938.
Earlier, archives related to the "comfort women" had also been nominated to the Memory of the World Register (the 2017 nomination was not successful). The nomination and inscription of both sets of archives reflect continued international attention to the preservation of archival memory concerning Japanese military war crimes during World War II.
