On August 14, 2017 (the World "Comfort Women" Memorial Day), the documentary film "Twenty Two" was released in mainland China. Directed by Guo Ke, the film features 22 victims of the "comfort women" system in mainland China as its subjects (the title comes from the 22 elderly women still alive when filming began).
When the film was released, only eight of the 22 elderly women were still alive. In November 2023, the last surviving elderly woman in the film passed away. This documentary, crowdfunded by more than thirty thousand people, has become an important work of visual documentation of the "comfort women" history in mainland China and was also screened in Japan and elsewhere, advancing public understanding of this history.
