This page applies to the use of this website’s content and to the claims of rights holders. It applies alongside the “Terms of Use & Disclaimer”; matters already covered there are not repeated here.
1. Overview of Ownership
- Text, arrangement, charts and page design produced by this website itself: owned by the Center.
- Materials provided by third-party archives, media or individuals: owned by the original rights holders; displayed by this website on the basis of authorisation or fair use.
- Materials provided by, or concerning, the persons involved (victims and their families): owned by those persons and their families; disclosure requires express authorisation, anonymity and risk review, and confirmation of rights.
2. Standard Citation Format
- Citing public archives: please use the public reference number shown on the page and the standard citation format it provides, and credit this website as the source.
- Citing research articles: please credit the author, title, date of publication and this website as the source.
- Reproduction, compilation and translation: please obtain permission through “Contact Us” first, and credit the source prominently; source notes, reference numbers and watermarks must not be removed or altered.
3. Takedown and Correction Requests
Who may make a request: the persons concerned themselves, their families or legal representatives; rights holders (copyright, portrait rights, privacy); and the source institutions of the materials cited.
What may be requested:
- Removal: content involving personal privacy, where identity may be inferred, where authorisation has been withdrawn, or where ownership is in doubt.
- Correction: errors in historical statements, incorrect source notes, or inaccurate reference numbers or version information.
- Anonymisation: content of scholarly value that needs the identity of the persons concerned to be concealed (replaced with an anonymised version).
- Restriction of use: prohibition of particular uses (such as commercialisation or secondary distribution).
How to make a request:
- Submit it through “Contact Us”, stating the page address or archive reference number, your relationship to the content, the specific request, and verifiable contact details.
- For requests concerning the identity of the persons involved or the rights of their families, we do not require a public account of the experiences suffered; we collect only the minimum information needed to handle the request.
How we handle it:
- Takedown first: for requests involving personal privacy, inferable identity or disputed authorisation, we suspend public access to the content while verification is under way, so that harm does not continue.
- Verification: in the order of ownership, privacy and ethics; where necessary, in consultation with the source institution, the persons concerned or their families.
- Action: removal, correction, anonymisation or restriction of use, with the date of update shown on the page; where a matter cannot be resolved immediately, the reason is stated honestly.
- Informing the requester: the outcome is communicated to the person who made the request.
What we will not do:
- We will not delete authentic historical records in response to a request: where content does not involve privacy or ownership issues, we may correct it, add sources or add a note rather than removing it outright.
- We will not refuse a rights holder’s lawful withdrawal on the ground that authorisation was once given (authorisation may be withdrawn; see “Privacy & Submissions”).
4. Improper Use
- It is prohibited to use this website’s historical materials for sensationalism, personal attacks, commercial marketing, or any purpose unrelated to historical research and public education.
- It is prohibited to attempt to infer, reconstruct or disclose the identity of persons protected by anonymisation.
- In cases of improper use, we reserve the right to refuse service or to pursue such liability as may apply; where necessary, access permissions will be removed.
5. Scope of This Page
- This page is a statement of process and does not constitute legal advice; specific disputes are handled in accordance with the law.
